Industrialization was a time period where the United States experienced prosperity and many advancements in technology. Nevertheless, while many beneficial events came from this time period, there were also numerous negative outcomes. This can be seen three decades after The Civil War, where the idea that anyone could rise upwards in society with the use of hard work, thriftiness, and a bit of luck, became widespread among American citizens. However, this idea was only proven correct in individual cases, as the majority of the working class remained in the same financial position despite their strong work ethic. After the Civil War, the United States entered a period of industrialization where inventions were being created, and old†¦show more content†¦People would crowd the streets, creating makeshift marketplaces so that â€Å"the very hallways had been made into shops† (Riis, â€Å"The Bend† from How The Other Half Lives), although the products were not sui table for any consumer. Vendors would sell â€Å"slimy, odd-looking† fish, â€Å"anything but appetizing† meat, â€Å"stale bread†, and â€Å"loads of decaying vegetables† (Riis, â€Å"The Bend† from How The Other Half Lives). Since cramped living and the substandard food was all that many workers could afford, sanitation became an issue and diseases rapidly spread despite small efforts to clean up. Mortality rates increased due to atrocious living conditions, high crime rates as â€Å"abuse† and â€Å"murder† became â€Å"the normal condition† (Riis, â€Å"The Bend† from How The Other Half Lives), and because â€Å"those who survived the starving process grow up the victims of malnutrition† (Proclamation of the Striking Textile Workers of Lawrence). For example, in â€Å"The Bend†, â€Å"their per centage of the total mortality in the block was 68.28, while for the whole city the proportion was only 46.20 † (Riis, â€Å"The Bend† from How The Other Half Lives). This shows how badly the living conditions affected the lives of workers, as many were dying in hopes to achieve prosperity.
